Coupled with working, Yianni is also studying towards his Level 4 National Certificate in Carpentry at the Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec). Students who gain this qualification are eligible for career opportunities such as carpentry and building, and can progress to be a construction leading hand, supervisor, foreman, site manager, or a project manager.

Yianni spends most of his time at work helping to build new houses or undertake renovations.

He said he enjoys the hands-on opportunities the work provides, as well as the satisfaction of seeing a finished project.

Average pay

  • Building and construction labourers usually earn $15–$18 per hour.
