“When I was younger, I thought it was just about creating beautiful hair, but there is so much more to it! The long 12-hour days standing on your feet all day were definitely a shock to the body and also no one told me how crazy and busy it can get in the salon. Lots of deep breathing and listening skills are vital!”

Using her friend’s hair to practise cutting and colouring when she was young, Chenoa went on to completing a year at a hairdressing college, then secured an apprenticeship with Oblique Hair Spa on Auckland’s North Shore. Now she has come full cycle – taking a new apprentice through the ropes.

“It is so much fun and exciting to see someone you are training become an amazing stylist.”

A positive and happy attitude, as well as perfect time management, are among the most important qualities Chenoa says every good hairdresser needs to have.

“Good listening skills are also imperative, as well as an open mind with a creative imagination, and of course, excellent personal presentation.”

While it is hard work, it is a rewarding career path.

“I love how I can turn anyone’s day around by doing what I enjoy! It’s amazing when you see your skills transform someone’s confidence and it’s never boring – no day is ever the same. I also have been to the Sydney Hair Expo 2013 and attended many cutting/colour and business courses throughout the last few years; I am so lucky to have such a great team and mentors that believe in me at Oblique Hair Spa.”
