Question: All the jobs I want say “must have experience”. But how do I get that experience if I can’t find a job?

Answer: Thanks for asking this question – I’m sure many people feel the same way as you do. I recommend you explore the following ideas:

  • Remind yourself that everyone got their start somehow, so if they managed to figure it out, then so can you.
  • Ask yourself why you want those jobs, write down your answers then find people who have those jobs and ask them how they got started. You can use LinkedIn for direct outreach as well as your own network.
  • Accept that sometimes you may have to take a sideways step to achieve your dream. You may end up doing another role first to gain more experience.

If you really want these jobs, you’re smart enough to find a way. Confidence comes from experience. Eighty per cent of people fail in life because they never start. Turn any fear into your friend and start now.
